Rail News: Mechanical
Today, RailPower Technologies Corp. announced the U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe National Transportation System Center has ordered three Green Goat® switcher locomotives from wholly owned U.S. subsidiary RailPower Hybrid Technologies Corp.
USDOT plans to use the 2,000-horsepower hybrid locomotives at U.S. Army bases in Barstow and Sierra, Calif., and Fort Lewis, Wash.
"The U.S. government has hundreds of switcher locomotives in the military and other installations," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement. "The order brings with it the potential for wider adoption of the technology throughout the U.S. military and DOT locomotive fleets."
Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and cut fuel use about 50 percent compared with conventional 1,000- to 2,000-horsepower switchers.
