Union Pacific Railroad recently contracted RMI to provide online car hire settlement and reporting services for about 50 connecting short lines.
Using RMI's RailConnect® EMS services, the small roads will become full participants in the railroad industry's car hire settlement process, according to a prepared statement. The short lines also will be able to access RMI's Web-based tools to manage car hire costs and equipment utilization. RMI's system is designed to automate the short lines' car hire settlement and reporting processes without changing any of their current reclaim or allowance provisions.
"We expect all the roads to be converted to our service by Oct. 1," said Stan Broome, RMI vice president of equipment management services, adding that the short lines will increase RMI's car hire system customer base to 385 railroads.
RMI provides Web-based rail information services designed to help transportation companies manage rail operations, improve customer service and reduce costs.
