Rail News: Mechanical
Today, San Diego’s North County Transit District (NCTD) will begin testing diesel-multiple units on a portion of the SPRINTER line, which currently is under construction.
The agency has taken delivery of 10 of the 12 DMUs it ordered from Siemens Transportation Systems Inc. NCTD will test the vehicles near a 40,000-square-foot vehicle maintenance facility being built in Escondido, Calif. Scheduled to be complete in December, the facility will serve as the central location for SPRINTER’s dispatching, security, fueling and train-washing functions.
Scheduled to open in December 2007, the 22-mile, 15-station SPRINTER line will serve Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido. The $440 million project also includes a 1.7-mile loop to serve Cal State San Marcos.
