National Railway Equipment Co. recently awarded a contract to Intelligent Power Systems Ltd. to supply traction-motor controllers and low-voltage power supply (LVPS) units for a prototype environmentally friendly locomotive National Railway is developing for Union Pacific Railroad.
The Class I plans to use the Truck Engine Switch (TES) unit for medium- to heavy-duty switching operations. The TES features two diesel engines — developed for large trucks — that power a generator, which provides electricity for the traction motors. The locomotive is designed to reduce emissions compared with a conventional switcher.
A division of Turbo Genset Inc., Intelligent Power Systems will design and produce electronics designed to control the power supplied to the traction motors, and LVPS units to provide onboard auxiliary power. The supplier plans to develop and begin testing a system in second-quarter 2005.
"This order is a significant step for Turbo Genset as it is presents an opportunity for us to expand our product offerings to the rail industry," said Turbo Genset Chief Executive Officer Michael Hunt in a prepared statement. "We have targeted the rail industry as a major growth area."
