FreightCar America begins to deliver Wheeling & Lake Erie's first-ever new cars

Rail cars are arriving at the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. (W&LE) — the first new cars the 840-mile regional has ever purchased.

FreightCar America Inc. recently began delivering 150 multi-purpose triple hopper cars produced at its Johnstown, Pa., facility to the railroad. W&LE plans to use the steel cars to move coal, aggregates, limestone and taconite pellets.

“Initially, we will put the cars into iron-ore service,” said W&LE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Larry Parsons in a prepared statement.

The cars also are the first steel triple hoppers to be built in many years, said FreightCar America Senior Vice President of Marketing and sales Ed Whalen.

“We already have negotiated a follow-on order for similar open-top hopper cars,” he said.

FreightCar America builds coal, flat, intermodal and coil steel cars, mill gondolas and motor vehicle carriers at plants in Johnstown, Danville, Ill., and Roanoke, Va.
