Class Is pool box cars to provide tip-top fleet
advertisement
Last month, the seven U.S. and Canadian Class Is implemented rail-car sharing program North American Boxcar Pools (NABP), which is designed to improve asset utilization and maintain a quality fleet of 50-foot Plate C box cars.
Under NABP, each Class I supplies the pool with 70-ton box cars featuring sliding doors and rigid, cushioned underframes. The railroads perform inspections to certify car quality. Any box cars that aren’t maintained to Association of American Railroads standards are dropped from the pool.
The Class Is hired TTX Co. to manage the pool and solicit moves for the fleet. However, the railroad that accepts a shipper’s car order will continue to supply empty cars to that shipper.
The Class Is might add other car types to NABP next year.
