Class I orders 35 hybrid locomotives from RailPower

RailPower Technologies Corp. recently received a commitment from a Class I to purchase 35 Green Goat® hybrid locomotives during the next four years. RailPower didn't identify the railroad.

The locomotive builder plans to begin delivering the 2,000-horsepower units next year and conclude deliveries in 2008.

"This is a major development for the company as it is our first large, multi-year order with a Class I railroad," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement. "Combining our existing firm and conditional orders with the locomotives under today's announcement … will give RailPower an order book of 76 locomotives — 78 if we include our two lease units."

RailPower's attempt to establish a manufacturing line in Calgary, Alberta, has taken longer than anticipated and slowed a production launch, said Maier.

"However, the production process is now fully under way," he said. "Initial pre-production locomotives have been completed and are currently undergoing rigorous testing before joining our demonstration fleet."

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and cut fuel use about 50 percent compared with conventional switchers.
