KCS has Texas grant in hand to purchase two hybrid switchers

Last week, Kansas City Southern obtained a $1.5 million grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to purchase two hybrid Green Goat® switchers from RailPower Technologies Corp.

KCS is one of three Class Is to receive a TCEQ grant, which the state awards to projects designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from locomotives, heavy construction equipment, trucks, tugboats and pushboats.

KCS has sent two GP-10s to RailPower's Calgary, Alberta, plant, where the supplier will rebuild the locomotives into Green Goat units. The railroad expects to take delivery of the refurbished locomotives — which will be used at Beaumont and Port Arthur yards — in second-quarter 2005.

KCS plans to submit grant applications to TCEQ to purchase additional Green Goats for yards in Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Dallas and Port Arthur.

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, 2,000-horsepower Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and cut fuel use about 50 percent compared with conventional 1,000- to 2,000-horsepower switchers.
