UP and GE schedule California 'green' tour to tout environmentally friendly locomotive technology

Union Pacific Railroad and GE – Transportation officials are hitting the road in California to get the word out that locomotives are “cleaner and greener.”

During a Green Locomotive Technology Tour to be held Feb. 20-28, UP and GE representatives will brief government officials and high school students on fuel conservation initiatives and railroad safety practices, and provide onboard tours of environmentally friendly locomotives.

Stopping in West Colton, Fresno, Stockton, Roseville, Oakland, Los Angeles and Long Beach, the event will showcase GE’s Evolution Series locomotives; generator set or “Genset” switchers featuring Tier 3-certified off-road diesel engines designed to reduce air emissions; a high-horsepower locomotive UP is field testing that features an experimental oxidation catalyst filter; and a low-horsepower yard locomotive featuring a diesel particulate filter.

“This tour is truly a rolling environmental laboratory that is displaying the proven technology we’re using today and the experimental technology we’re testing to help lower locomotive emissions and improve fuel economy," said UP Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Young in a prepared statement.

By year’s end, the Class I will have invested more than $5 billion to purchase new environmentally friendly locomotives, as well as millions of dollars to test emission-reducing technologies, UP said.
