CSXT takes delivery of 300th Evolution Series locomotive from GE

CSX Transportation’s fleet of DC-traction Evolution Series® locomotives has reached a round number. The Class I recently took delivery of its 300th 4,400-horsepower Evolution Series from GE – Transportation.

The DC units feature GE’s 12-cylinder GEVO engine, which is designed to cut fuel usage over its lifetime by more than 170,000 gallons compared with engines the company built in 2004 and reduce air emissions more than 40 percent. The locomotives also feature GE’s Auto Engine Start Stop that helps reduce idling to conserve fuel. The locomotive builder introduced the Evolution Series in 2005.

“CSXT evaluates many cost factors before awarding any contract, and this is especially true for a locomotive contract,” said CSXT Vice President of Purchasing and Materials Fran Chinnici in a prepared statement. “Environmental impact, fuel consumption, reliability and serviceability … were all key elements in this [buying] decision.”
