CN to acquire another 65 locomotives by next year

Canadian National Railway Co. is doubling its locomotive purchases for the rest of this year and into 2008. The railroad will acquire 65 high-horsepower, fuel-efficient locomotives in 2007 and 2008 in addition to 65 units scheduled to be delivered this year.

CN recently ordered 40 4,400-horsepower ES44DC locomotives from GE – Transportation and 25 4,300-horsepower SD70M-2 locomotives from Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. The GE units will be delivered between December 2007 and February 2008; the EMD units will delivered by August 2008.

CN previously ordered 50 SD70M-2s for delivery between August and October 2007 and 15 ES44DCs for delivery by November 2007. The railroad plans to use the locomotives primarily to accommodate traffic for the new Port of Prince Rupert container terminal scheduled to open in October.

All 130 locomotives will be equipped with distributed power capabilities to improve fuel efficiency and train handling, and maximize productivity. The new units — which will be about 15 percent more fuel efficient than the power they replace — will enable CN to retire 145 older locomotives.
