In memoriam: EMD engineering director Smith

Electro-Motive Division Director of Engineering Karl Smith died July 12 in his Downers Grove, Ill., home. He was 53.

Smith served General Motors Corp.'s Electro-Motive Division for 31 years in such positions as bogie design engineer, supervisor of bogie design, manager of aftermarket engineering and director of product service, as well as director of engineering the past six years.

"Karl was a gifted engineer and well-respected leader throughout his career. He was involved, either from a technical aspect or from a leadership role, with many of the technological improvements and innovations we have made to our products over the years," said EMD Vice President and General manager R. W. Happel in a letter to employees. "Karl was a mentor to many and a friend to many more. His rare understanding of both the technology and the management aspects of our business will be sorely missed."

Smith is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, and three children.
