The United Transportation Union recently formed a nine-member panel charged with studying the organization and recommending ways to modernize the union.
Panel members include past UTU Presidents Al Chesser and Tom DuBose; retired Assistant General Secretary and Treasurer Dan Collins; retired union member Robert McHenry; retired General Chairperson Dale Hogan; retired Canadian Vice President Larry Olson; retired International Vice President Don Carver; Local 811 Officer Steve Dawson; and Bus Department General Chairperson James Williams.
During the past 35 years, emerging technology, gains by truckers and carrier mergers have "taken their toll on the UTU, as they have on all other unions with large numbers of members employed in the railroad industry," said UTU International President Paul Thompson in a prepared statement.
"Since the creation of the UTU, we have fought to protect our membership and not try to fight changes in technology, because that is a fight no union has ever won."
The panel will announce its recommendations at UTU's next quadrennial convention in 2007.
