On Jan. 1, the Transportation Communications Union (TCU) and International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) completed their merger as TCU/IAM. In July 2005, TCU affiliated with the IAMAW and the parties agreed to complete a full merger no later than January 2012.
TCU, which includes the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen division, represents about 46,000 U.S. workers, most of whom are employed in the rail industry. IAMAW represents more than 600,000 workers in the transportation, aerospace, government, automotive, defense and woodworking industries.
“This merger is a new beginning for our union,” said TCU/IAM President Bob Scardelletti in a prepared statement. “IAM shares our roots in the railroad, our strong representation on the Hill, and the strength and solidarity that education of our local reps provides.”
By joining IAMAW’s ranks, TCU will “help strengthen the organization’s membership and the overall labor movement,” said U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) in a statement.
