New Jersey Transit on Wednesday announced a tentative agreement with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), the largest transit union at the agency.
Specifics of the tentative pact were not disclosed, pending notification of the union's members. ATU represents bus drivers, clerical workers, mechanics, light-rail workers and other maintenance employees at NJ Transit.
The tentative pact "reflects a shared commitment to our more than 5,500 dedicated employees represented by the ATU, our valued riders and New Jersey taxpayers," said Kris Kolluri, NJ Transit's president and CEO, in a prepared statement.
Said ATU International Vice President Ray Greaves: "Together, we have achieved a contract that delivers much-needed improvements, ensuring that our transit professionals are recognized and rewarded for their hard work and commitment to serving the public. As we move forward, we are optimistic that this agreement will pave the way for a stronger future for our members and the communities they serve."
The agreement comes as the agency's relationship with its rail workers remains strained. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLET) announced April 15 that its members rejected a tentative eight-year contract with NJ Transit, setting off a countdown to a potential strike or lockout that could begin May 16. Last week, NJ Transit released a contingency plan in the event of a strike.
