Rail News: Labor
A majority of operating employees at the Huron & Eastern Railway Co. Inc. voted in favor of joining the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) in a May 11 election certified by the National Mediation Board. The workers previously were unrepresented.
The union will represent about 30 workers at the 174-mile short line, which is owned by RailAmerica Inc. The BLET now has organized three short lines this year, including the Panhandle Northern Railroad and Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway.
“Our goal is aggressive organizing on short line railroads in 2006,” said BLET Organizing Director Tommy Miller in a prepared statement.
The Huron & Eastern interchanges with CSX Transportation, Canadian National Railway Co., the Tuscola & Saginaw Bay Railway and Lake State Railway.
