Rail News: Kansas City Southern
KCSM marks seventh Bulkmatic transload terminal in Mexico
On Oct. 9, Bulkmatic de México opened its seventh transload terminal on Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V.'s (KCSM) network.
The railroad provided the land and lent technical and financial support for the facility, which will be marketed to shippers in northern Mexico, said David Eaton, a KCSM director, in an item posted on the "KCS News" web page. KCSM serves 59 transload terminals in Mexico that generate more than 12 percent of Kansas City Southern's revenue, and Bulkmatic is the railroad's largest transload partner, he said.
"Transload terminals are a vital link between KCS' rail service and shippers who do not have direct access to the track," said Eaton. "We will use this new terminal to further develop business with existing customers and convert new traffic from truck to rail."
KCSM took underutilized land and converted it to a productive use with the transload terminal, said Adriana Covarrubias, a KCSM official.
"Over the last three years, we have made a concerted effort to re-purpose underutilized concession real estate for the development of transload terminals. We have done similar deals in Matamoros, Monterrey, Saltillo, Queretaro and Nueva Italia," he said.
