The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) and GCT Global Container Terminals are exploring a partnership to develop Roberts Bank Terminal 2 (RBT2) at the Port of Vancouver in British Columbia.
The entities entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for one year to negotiate and create a joint development agreement, with GCT as the possible terminal builder and operator, VFPA officials said in a press release. VFPA will continue to lead development of the RBT2 landmass and will remain responsible for permitting and engagement with indigenous communities.
The proposed RBT2 will increase the port's container capacity to meet future demand, improve supply-chain resilience and maintain Canada's global competitiveness, VFPA officials said.
As part of the MOU, GCT will also withdraw its application to the Major Project Office for a separate expansion project at the port, the Deltaport Berth 4, and will instead focus on advancing development of RBT2.
The terminal will be served by BNSF Railway, CPKC and CN. Learn more about the RBT2 project in this RailPrime article.
