UP improves intermodal terminal's gate security by adding fingerprint-scanning system

Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) recently finished installing its Intelligent Intermodal Solutions (IIS) gate system at Union Pacific Railroad's Global III intermodal terminal in Rochelle, Ill.
Designed to streamline container processing at ports, rail yards and other intermodal facilities, the IIS system features digital video, optical character recognition and biometric technologies to automatically identify containers, vehicles and drivers as they enter and leave a terminal.
SAIC tailored the IIS system at Global III by including a two-finger fingerprint scanner designed to identify truck drivers and all UP personnel at entry and exit gates. The system maintains a fingerprint database to enable UP to positively identify drivers and employees. SAIC provides UP 24/7 monitoring, maintenance and system support.
"In this post 9-11 environment, UP and SAIC worked hard to exceed the standards we established in our four previous gate-processing installations," said Terry Gibson, vice president of corporate development for SAIC's Transportation and Security Technology Group, in a prepared statement.
