South Carolina Ports' largest carrier, MSC, will launch two new weekly services at the Port of Charleston in September, connecting shippers in the southeastern United States with northern Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia.

The Albatros and the Dragon services, both transatlantic services, will begin calling the Leatherman Terminal in September, SC Ports officials said in a press release. Both services will use 15,000 20-foot-equivalent unit (TEU) vessels.

The terminal is also in the second phase of an expansion. An extension of the wharf will create space for five more ship-to-shore cranes. Crews have erected all six electric rail-mounted gantry cranes at the Leatherman Rail Facility, which is set to open in early 2026, and contractor Kuenz has begun to commission the cranes. When completed, the facility will be capable of handling 1 million rail lifts per year.

SC Ports is also making progress on construction of the 1-mile drayage road that when completed will segregate intermodal traffic from Interstate 26.

"The continued growth of our inland rail facilities, and our commitment to enhancing efficiency for our customers necessitated this critical infrastructure expansion," said SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin.

The Port of Charleston offers daily express intermodal and merchandise rail services through CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
