The Port of Philadelphia (PhilaPort) will receive a $837 million investment from commonwealth, federal and private funding sources to support the largest capacity expansion in the port's history.
The planned improvements will expand container handling capacity by 122% and auto capacity by 18% across the port’s facilities, port officials said in a press release.
An initial capital investment of $371.5 million from the commonwealth comprises $31 million to support dredging at Southport Berth I; $145 million for reclamation work at Southport Berth II and the North Wharf; $109.4 million for land acquisition; and $58.1 million to support crane and equipment acquisition.
That investment will unlock a further $200 million from private-sector investment and $266 million in U.S. Department of Transportation grant funding, officials said.
The additional funds will support plans that include the construction of a new 2,000 linear foot berth at Southport Marine Terminal; the purchase of the 152-acre Mustin Yard parcel to allow expansion for auto and container cargo; and improvements at the Tioga Marine Terminal berth to better handle liquid bulk barges and breakbulk vessels. The investment will also allow PhilaPort to acquire and develop additional properties in the Southern Port District to increase capacity and support future growth.
PhilaPort is served by Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX.
