The U.S. Maritime Administration recently awarded a $11.25 million Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) grant to the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay to support the development of its Pacific Coast Intermodal Port (PCIP) project.
The PCIP is a proposed ship-to-rail container terminal on the North Spit of the bay, port officials said in a press release. The grant will help prepare the future terminal area for cargo movement and strengthen connections to the port's Coos Bay Rail Line, they added.
The PCIP is designed to add capacity at the constrained port, providing shippers with an additional trade option that is connected directly to inland markets. The 175-acre facility would be situated about 6 miles up the Coos Bay Harbor channel. The project calls for upgrades to the rail line and an expansion of the channel, port officials said.
The PIDP award follows previous federal grants for the PCIP through the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects, Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements and Railroad Crossing Elimination programs, as well as a $100 million commitment from the state of Oregon.
