Last week, Norfolk Southern Corp. added three lanes to Modal-X, the railroad’s Web-based door-to-door intermodal service.
NS now offers the service between Memphis, Tenn., and Morrisville, Pa.; Rutherford, Pa.; and Newark, N.J. When the Class I launched Modal-X last month, the service was only available in local lanes originating in Chicago and Morrisville.
Customers can log onto www.modal-x.com to request next-day transportation. Earlier this month, NS began offering a “Buy Now” online feature that enable shippers to purchase next-day transportation at a set price based on current market conditions between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Modal-X links the railroad’s marketing and ramp-to-ramp capabilities with NS subsidiary Thoroughbred Direct Intermodal Services’ door-to-door operational expertise, NS said.
