Although its cargo volume slipped in September, the Port of Los Angeles was still able to cap off a record-breaking quarter.

Last month, the port processed 883,053 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), down 7.5% compared with volume in September 2024. But third-quarter volume reached 2.9 million TEUs, the best-ever quarterly mark, port officials said in a press release

Loaded imports in September clocked in at 460,044 TEUs, down 7.6%, while loaded exports totaled 114,693 TEUs, about the same on a year-over-year basis. The port handled 308,317 empty containers, down 10%.

As trade policy continues to unfold, more unpredictability likely is in store, said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka in a press release.

When sweeping changes were first announced, importers abruptly stopped their orders from China. When those policies were softened and deadlines extended, cargo volume picked up again,” he said. The supply chain has been on a roller coaster all year, and that ride continues.

Through 2025’s first nine months, the port handled 7,817,057 TEUs, up 3% compared with the same 2024 period.
