The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) yesterday launched "An Intelligent Container Journey," a comprehensive, free and interactive resource designed to help the intermodal industry understand and implement AI across operations.
Built in over 18 months in collaboration with freight professionals, technology leaders and industry operators, the framework outlines how four types of AI can strengthen performance at each stage of a container's movement from origin to empty return, IANA officials said in a press release.
The resource examines use cases for Large Language Models/Generative AI, Agentic AI, Applied AI and Analytical AI; it maps out the different stages of container movement — origin, gate and terminal, rail linehaul, end ramp, final mile and empty return — and explores how each type of AI can be used to support decision making. The framework also addresses the risks of AI adoption, such as overreliance on automation, poor data quality, untested logic, trust gaps and siloed systems, IANA officials said.
"Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept for intermodal. It's beginning to reshape how freight is planned, moved, monitored and managed," said Anne Reinke, president and CEO of IANA. "This journey addresses a critical gap: the industry needed a plain-language, operator-grounded resource that shows where AI actually helps and where human authority remains essential. An Intelligent Container Journey was built by the industry, for the industry."
