The Don Young Port of Alaska broke ground this week on construction of a new cargo bay, marking a milestone in an ongoing $2.8 billion Port Modernization Program (PMP).
The $977 million Cargo Terminal 1 will be constructed south of the port's existing cargo terminals, with completion estimated in 2029. Construction on a second new cargo terminal will start in 2029 and be completed in 2032, according to a local news report. Once the new cargo terminals are operational, the old ones will be demolished.
The port will also construct a dedicated petroleum terminal to replace an aging, damaged terminal from 1965, port officials said in a press release. The municipality of Anchorage in late April was awarded a $4.7 million federal Port Infrastructure Development Program grant to advance the project's planning and design.
PMP projects already completed include construction of a different petroleum and cement terminal and a new administration building, as well as shipping lane stabilization work.
The Don Young Port of Alaska is served by Alaska Railroad, which operates a cargo yard adjacent to the port.
