The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has awarded a $5 million grant to CSX to help fund improvements to the Class I's Livernois Intermodal Facility in southwest Detroit.
Funded through the Michigan Railroad Enhancement (M-REP) program, the grant will support equipment upgrades, trackwork and new pavement over dirt and gravel at the facility, according to an MDOT press release. The grant program targets investments in freight-rail corridors and facilities to improve rail safety, operational efficiency, accessibility, capacity and the environment.
M-REP grants reimburse up to 70% of project costs associated with railroad track, bridges, grade crossings and rail scales used to weigh freight cars on mainline corridors and at rail yards, intermodal facilities and transload facilities.
Paving the Detroit intermodal yard will help limit the amount of dust blown into surrounding neighborhoods, MDOT officials said. The project’s total cost is $11.7 million, with CSX contributing about $6.7 million.
"The [project] will not only improve the efficiency and safety of our operations, but also reduce the environmental impact of freight transportation in the region," said Carrie Crozier, CSX's vice president of intermodal operations-CSX Intermodal Terminals.
