Indiana River & Rail Terminals (IR&RT) this week announced it recently managed a barge-to-truck transload of oversized, delicate cargo at the Ports of Indiana-Mount Vernon.
Destined for a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant under construction in central Indiana, the shipment consisted of two 51-ton tanks built in the Houston area, IR&RT officials said in a press release.
The tanks’ size made it impractical for them to be transported over land. Instead, the tanks' transportation provider, Barnhart, opted to ship the tanks via barge on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Mississippi River and Ohio River. Upon arrival at Mount Vernon, IR&RT transloaded each tank onto Barnhart specialized heavy-haul trucks.
“Barnhart chose Indiana River & Rail at Ports of Indiana-Jeffersonville to handle Lebanon-bound materials earlier this year, and we’re very happy to have Mount Vernon’s heavy-duty capabilities play a role in this historic expansion of Indiana’s pharmaceutical industry,” said Mount Vernon Port Director Jason May.
IR&RT is a partnership between the Ports of Indiana and Superior River Terminals–Indiana.
