Total intermodal volume in first-quarter 2024 rose 8.8% to 4,286,600 units compared to volume in Q1 2023, the Intermodal Association of North America announced this week.
International containers in the quarter soared 18% to 2,148,571, while domestic containers climbed 3.4% to 1,993,687. However, trailers fell 24.8% to 144,342 units from a year ago, according to an IANA press release.
"International volume growth was the driver for continuing intermodal industry gains in the first quarter," said IANA President and CEO Joni Casey. “Consumer spending provided a basis for definitive import increases."
All but one of the seven highest-density trade corridors, which collectively handled more than 60% of total volume, logged increases in the quarter.
Volume in the South Central-Southwest Corridor skyrocketed 25.9%, and the Southeast-Southwest soared 19.1%. The Midwest-Southwest surged 15.4%; the Northeast-Midwest, jumped 10.8%; and the Intra-Southeast, rose 10.2%.
The Trans-Canada increased 2.7%, while the Midwest-Northwest declined 3.1%.
Total IMC volume in the quarter fell 0.4% year over year.
