The Port of Montana, Union Pacific Railroad and local officials last month marked the opening of an $8 million rail infrastructure expansion at Butte’s Montana Connections Business Development Park.
The project added more than 20,000 track feet, which will increase the port’s capacity for additional freight and longer trains, UP officials said in the railroad's Inside Track newsletter.
"The expansion will yield a better operational plan for both the Port of Montana and UP," said Nathan Anderson, UP's senior director of public affairs and corporate relations. "This enhanced plan will allow for rail growth in the western Montana market.”
Four new tracks are now available for transloading and daily operations, and five new development sites were added to the park.
The port is a full-service transload, warehouse and distribution facility, an inland port with UP and BNSF Railway Co. rail access. It serves as a critical transload facility on UP’s Rocky Mountain Service Unit.
