Intermodal: New Jersey terminal operator awards automated gate system pact to SAIC

On Oct. 28, Science Applications International Corp.'s (SAIC) Transportation and Security Technology Group announced it had landed a contract from Maher Terminals Inc. to provide an Intelligent Intermodal Solutions (IIS) gate system to support Maher's automated receiving and delivery systems at the Port Elizabeth, N.J., facility. The deal's terms weren't disclosed.

Designed to expedite the processing of cargo containers at ports, rail yards and other intermodal facilities, Maher's IIS system will feature SAIC's digital video, optical character recognition and smart-card technologies to automatically identify containers, vehicles and drivers as they enter and leave the terminal, and track them during the terminal transaction.

The system also will include SAIC's Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System, which uses gamma-ray scanning technology to automatically verify empty containers.

The system is scheduled to begin operating in third-quarter 2004. Under the contract, SAIC also will provide system component maintenance and support.
