Pacer places cartage operation under Pacer Stacktrain umbrella

Pacer International Inc. recently transferred local-trucking operation Pacer Cartage from Pacer Global Logistics, the company's retail division, to wholesale division Pacer Stacktrain.

"Our objective … is to better align the cartage unit's products with the product portfolio offered by Pacer Stacktrain," said Pacer International Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Don Orris in a prepared statement. "This means our [intermodal marketing company] customers can directly access these cartage capabilities through the wholesale channel in order to provide a reliable and cost-effective door-to-door package for retailers and manufacturers … because a large proportion of door-to-door moves are packaged by IMCs."

Pacer Global Logistics — an IMC — will become a Pacer Cartage customer to provide retail customers seamless access to local trucking services, said Orris.

President Bob Arovas will continue to manage Pacer Cartage but now report to Pacer Stacktrain President Tom Shurstad.

Pacer Cartage's network comprises more than 600 trucks (mostly owner operated) and terminal hubs located in 17 cities. Pacer Stacktrain provides double-stack rail and related transportation services to IMCs and other transportation intermediaries.
