The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) recently named CenterPoint Properties the winner of the 2011 IANA Intermodal Achievement Award, which recognizes a public or private organization that contributed to the advancement of the intermodal freight transportation industry during the previous year.

CenterPoint Properties developed the CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet/Elwood, Ill., a 6,000-acre inland port anchored by the BNSF Logistics Park–Chicago and Union Pacific Railroad’s Joliet Intermodal Terminal.

The center has grown to become the nation’s largest inland port, handling between 4 million to 6 million 20-foot equivalent units annually, IANA officials said in a prepared statement. In addition, the center improves supply-chain efficiencies by connecting agricultural producers, manufacturers and distributors with multiple Class Is, and helps minimize vehicle-borne pollution and local congestion, they said.

“The CenterPoint Intermodal Center has had an innovative impact on the continued efficiency of America’s supply chain,” said IANA Chairman Steve Rubin. “It demonstrates the company’s commitment to address future capacity needs due to increases in import volumes and agricultural exports, while contributing to highway congestion mitigation.”

IANA will present the award to CenterPoint Properties on Nov. 14 during the opening general session of the 2011 IANA Intermodal Expo to be held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
