Illinois DOT launches environmental study for Chicago-St. Louis corridor second track

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Federal Railroad Administration recently began working on a Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement to study additional improvements along the Chicago-to-St. Louis high-speed rail corridor.

IDOT is seeking to expand service frequency between the two cities by adding a second track and making other improvements along the route. The current intercity passenger-rail service operates on a single track shared by freight and Amtrak trains.

In 2010, IDOT received a $1.25 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant to conduct the environmental study.

Next month, the department will host five open house meetings throughout the state to obtain input on the project.
