Rail News: High-Speed Rail

Spanish National Railways awards high-speed power head contract to Bombardier-led consortium

The Spanish National Railways (RENFE) recently awarded a $226 million contract to a Bombardier Transportation/Patentes Talgo consortium for 44 high-speed power heads.

Bombardier’s $120 million portion includes manufacturing the electrical equipment, propulsion system, train control and communications systems, and an exhaustive signaling system. Bombardier — which also will help with final assembly and testing — will complete most of the work at its Trápaga, Spain, plant.

Talgo will be responsible for manufacturing the mechanical components, including variable-gauge bogies.

The power heads will be coupled with variable-gauge coaches to form 22 nine-car trainsets for Spain’s new high-speed lines and conventional rail network.

The power heads are scheduled to be delivered between June 2006 and August 2008.
