International consulting and engineering firm ARCADIS recently obtained a contract to help design and manage a high-speed rail project through the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain.

Designed to shorten travel time between Perpignan, France, and Figueras, Spain, by two hours, the 27-mile line will accommodate freight and passenger trains. The project includes constructing a double track line over the land and two single tracks through two tunnels.

Scheduled to begin service in 2009, the line is expected to improve transportation between France and Spain.
