Rail News: CSX Transportation
How will CSX Intermodal meet escalating traffic demand? By adding terminal capacity and implementing technology, said CSXI President Jim Hertwig last week at the Intermodal Association of North America's 2006 Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
In September 2007, the company expects to open a 114-acre terminal in Chambersburg, Pa., that will provide access to nearby warehousing and logistics parks, and Interstate 81. CSXI also plans to expand or upgrade terminals in Chicago, Tampa and Buffalo, N.Y.
To tap the latest technology, the company recently implemented wireless communications to provide truck drivers instant updates, radio frequency technology to help increase terminal productivity and customer service, and an operations management system.
On Dec. 4, CSXI will implement a capacity management system at its Kearny, N.J., terminal to regulate the daily flow of empty equpment according to customer and day of week. The system will monitor and manage daily allotments and in-gate activity in real time.
