CSX Corp. yesterday announced its third-quarter 2026 financial results, including growth across revenue, income, earnings and volume.

For Q3 2026 compared to adjusted results from Q3 2025, the Class I posted operating income of $1.57 billion, up 25% from $1.25 billion. Net earnings for the quarter totaled $1.05 billion, up 29% from $818 million. Diluted earnings per share climbed to 57 cents, up 30% from 44 cents.

The operating margin expanded by 880 basis points to 39.1, compared to 30.1 in Q3 2025.

CSX posted record quarterly revenue of $4 billion, up 12% over Q3 2025 due to increased fuel surcharge revenue and higher volume and pricing across merchandise, intermodal and coal sectors, CSX officials said in a press release.

Volume for the quarter totaled 1.69 million units, up 5%. Merchandise revenue reached $2.5 billion, up 11% from Q3 2025, on volume of 679,000 units, up 3%. Intermodal revenue climbed 20% to $634 million on volume of 820,000 units, up 7%.

The Class I improved its Federal Railroad Administration personal injury frequency rate by 17% and the train accident rate by 5% year over year.

"CSX delivered strong earnings growth in the third quarter as disciplined execution helped us move more freight, for more customers, while maintaining our high standards for safety and service," said Steve Angel, CSX president and CEO. "The hard work of our railroaders has positioned us well as we enter the fourth quarter, and we look forward to making continued progress toward best-in-class performance in 2027."
