CSX yesterday announced it completed the final paving on the Guilford Avenue Bridge in Baltimore, a job that signifies a milestone in the Howard Street Tunnel project to modernize freight-rail infrastructure in the area.
The Howard Street Tunnel project is an initiative to expand the historic structure beneath downtown Baltimore that originally was constructed in 1895. The project's primary goal is to increase the tunnel’s vertical clearance, enabling double-stack intermodal trains to pass through, which will improve freight efficiency along the East Coast.
In September 2025, CSX completed the tunnel expansion, opening new opportunities for customers, the Port of Baltimore and the entire region, CSX officials said in a press release.
“Raising the bridge allowed us to avoid major disruptions and keep the project on track for the community and our customers,” said Brandon Knapp, CSX's senior director of Mid-Atlantic construction.
Meanwhile, CSX also announced yesterday that it has been named to the CDP "A" List for climate leadership, regaining its top score after two years at the B level. CSX is the only Class I railroad to earn this distinction, placing the company among global leaders in environmental disclosure and governance, CSX officials said.
