CSX dedicates new Ohio bridge on National Gateway

On Friday, CSX Corp. hosted a dedication ceremony for the new Fifth Street Bridge in Niles, Ohio.

The $1.4 million bridge features a higher vertical clearance than the previous structure to accommodate double-stack trains on CSX’s National Gateway, an intermodal route linking East Coast ports with the railroad's Northwest Ohio Terminal and other Midwestern distribution and manufacturing hubs. The project was funded through a combination of dollars provided by CSX and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The $850 million National Gateway, which is advancing via a public-private partnership, includes vertical clearance projects at 61 locations to accommodate double-stack trains. To date, 14 obstructions — including the previous Fifth Street Bridge — have been cleared on the route between North Baltimore, Ohio, and Chambersburg, Pa., keeping the Gateway’s first phase on track for completion in spring 2013, CSX officials said in a prepared statement.

“We are pleased to recognize the continued progress of the National Gateway,” said Louis Renjel, CSX’s vice president of strategic infrastructure initiatives. “Along with other planned investments, the new Fifth Street Bridge will help prepare CSX and the state of Ohio to meet increasing freight transportation demands and to enhance the flow of goods throughout the nation.”
