Construction of the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) is on track for completion and site opening by early 2027, Alabama Port Authority (APA) officials said in a press release.

Once operational, the 272-acre inland intermodal facility will connect central Alabama and the Port of Mobile via direct CSX service. Initial development includes a 120-acre yard with the capacity for 60,000 lifts, according to the APA.

Last week, leaders from the APA and the Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce toured the ICTF construction site, where ground-breaking occurred on Feb. 27, 2025. Crews have completed site grading and subsurface utility installations. Work is now underway on a new rail siding and CSX mainline bridge.

The $100 million ICTF is funded largely through federal appropriations, APA officials said. It will feature 3 miles of CSX siding track, three operational process tracks and two Kone rubber tire gantry cranes to move containers from rail to trucks.
