CSX garners spot on climate performance leadership index

CSX Corp. landed on the CDP Supplier Climate Performance Leadership Index (SCPLI) for environmental stewardship in 2013.

The Class I was recognized for a "steadfast commitment" to help customers make informed transportation decisions that reduce carbon emissions and meet their sustainability goals, CSX officials said in a press release.

"At CSX, we take seriously our responsibility to help customers understand their carbon footprint and capitalize on the environmental benefits of freight rail to reduce transportation-related emissions while improving efficiency," said Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Ward. "We continue to look for new ways to partner with customers to implement environmentally sustainable technologies and practices."

Compiled by FirstCarbon Solutions, the SCPLI highlights top companies' best practices for reducing carbon footprints and optimizing environmental performance. In its pilot year, the index recognizes 80 companies based on an analysis of more than 2,800 responses to a CDP questionnaire.

Last year, CSX landed on the CDP S&P 500 Carbon Performance Leadership Index for its efforts to reduce emissions and fuel usage — the only railroad among five industrial companies that earned a spot on the index. The Class I also was ranked in the top 10 of 40 industrial companies on the 2013 Global Climate Performance Leadership Index, which evaluates sustainability efforts.
