This month, Metrolink expects to complete the first phase of a $1.6 million upgrade to its communication system that will provide riders with more timely train schedule information and status updates at stations.
The new system already is operating on Metrolink's San Bernardino, Orange County, Inland Empire-Orange County and 91 lines, agency officials said in a prepared statement.
"We are making this investment in customer service, so our passengers have more ways to get information when and where they need it most," said Metrolink Chairman Richard Katz.
The project’s first phase consisted of new automated messages that inform riders when the next three trains are scheduled to arrive or depart, as well as special announcements, track changes and delay notifications.
By mid-year, riders will be able to sign up for train status updates via text messages and emails. The system also will be integrated with Metrolink’s social media sites.
The second and third phases will implement a text-to-speech feature allowing Metrolink's operations center staff to send audible messages to stations. The phases also will occur with the implementation of positive train control.
