Two rail industry suppliers recently obtained new orders and two others reported third-quarter financial results.
Wireless Matrix Corp. won an order from CSX Corp. for an additional 100 Mobile Base Station 2 communication devices for locomotives. Wireless Matrix will deliver the devices by year's end. In October 2006, the company obtained a 600-unit order from CSX that can be expanded to a total of 2,600 devices.
RailComm Inc. won a new order, too. The company will provide a computerized Track Warrant Control system for the Iowa Northern Railway Co. The 163-mile short line will access RailComm's Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) train-control system through a Web-enabled Software-as-a-Service delivery model.
Meanwhile, Railpower Technologies Corp. reported that its third-quarter revenue more than tripled year over year from $9.3 million to $33.5 million. However, the environmentally friendly locomotive builder recorded a quarterly net loss of $12.4 million compared with a net loss of $11.7 million in the same 2006 period. During the quarter, Railpower sold 33 locomotives — triple the amount ordered in third-quarter 2006.
The strong Canadian dollar affected Global Railway Industries Ltd.'s quarterly revenue. The company reported third-quarter revenue of $7.7 million, a 1.9 percent decrease compared with third-quarter 2006's total. Had the U.S.-Canadian dollar exchange rate remained constant, the company's revenue would have increased 5 percent. In addition, net earnings fell slightly year over year from $617,000 to $609,000. Global Railway supplies event recorder monitoring/control systems, train speedometers, track and signal components, rail-car doors and replacement parts, and rail gear.
