Earlier this month, the Kansas City Southern Railroad Co. (KCSR) closed grade crossings in Morton, Miss., and Gans, Okla. The closures were part of corridor projects KCSR is conducting with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Next year, KCSR plans to close another crossing near Gans in conjunction with the Oklahoma commission.
The Class I and MDOT are in the second of a five-year corridor project involving 88 crossings between Vicksburg and Meridian. The parties will close some crossings and upgrade warning devices or improve surfaces at others. KCSR also is working with the Missouri Department of Transportation on a three-year corridor project under which the parties will either close or upgrade warning devices at 75 crossings.
In addition, the Class I is negotiating corridor projects with other states and targeting an additional 100 crossing closures. Since 1997, KCSR has closed 53 public and 17 private crossings throughout its 10-state system. Another 12 public and 63 private crossings have been approved as closure candidates or are pending closure.
