KCS partners with Mississippi transportation department to improve, close crossings

Yesterday, Kansas City Southern announced it reached an agreement with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) to upgrade 88 public grade crossings between Vicksburg and Meridian during the next five years.

Under the $11.8 million project, the railroad and MDOT will fund upgrades to crossing surfaces and warning devices — such as installing signals, gates or flashers — as well work together to close some crossings.

"This project is significant because it allows us to accomplish in five years what could otherwise take 30 years," said KCS Manager of Public Safety Allen Pepper in a prepared statement.

KCS and MDOT officials are identifying the first 18 crossings that will receive new signals and gates, and negotiating with various counties and municipalities to close certain crossings.
