BART offers cell phone service in some underground stations

Cell-phone service from the San Francisco Bay area's five cellular carriers now is available underground on Bay Area Rapid Transit's (BART) system.
Passengers can use their phones at the Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell and Civic Center stations, and on the tracks between those stations. Cell phone service also is available in the station areas at the16th Street, 24th Street, Glen Park and Balboa Park facilities. Tracks between those stations will have cell-phone coverage by 2008's end.
Next year, BART expects cellular service to be extended through the Transbay Tube and at downtown Oakland stations.
