The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has approved safety upgrades at grade crossings in Huron, Richland and Summit counties.

Ashland Railway will install flashing lights and gates and a new surface at the State Route 99/Conwell Street crossing in Huron County and the County Route 184/Kuhn Road crossing in Richland County. Federal funds totaling $941,375 will help cover the cost of the upgrades, which must be completed by March 6, 2025.

In addition, Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway Co. will install flashing lights, gates and cantilevers at the Gilchrist Road crossing in Mogadore, Summit County. About $612,000 in federal dollars will help fund the work, which also must be completed by March 6, 2025.

Since the PUCO began implementing crossing safety upgrades, the number of train-motor vehicle crashes in Ohio each year have decreased from 356 in 1990 to 61 in 2022.
