• United Group Ltd. and Ansaldo STS won a $250 million contract from Australia's Queensland Rail Ltd. (QR) to provide signaling. The companies and QR formed Synergy Alliance, a company that will exist for five years to carry out the signaling work. United Group and Ansaldo STS will work with civil contractors to design, install and commission signaling, which will help QR increase capacity on coal routes serving port-loading facilities.

• Bombardier Transportation obtained a $118 million order from the Danish State Railways (DSB) for 10 three-car Contessa trains. The order includes an option for 30 additional trains, which can reach speeds up to 111 mph and automatically shift signaling and power systems when crossing a bridge between Denmark's and Sweden's borders. The trains will be leased by the National Rail Authority, which will provide them to DSBFirst when the company takes over the Oresund services in January 2009.

• Logistics and transportation service provider Pacer International promoted Brian Kane to chief financial officer to succeed Larry Yarberry, who will continue to serve in a senior executive role until he retires Dec. 31. Most recently senior vice president of corporate finance, Kane will assume the CFO post Sept. 15. He has held various operations and finance positions at Pacer during the past decade. Pacer also promoted Joseph Doherty to EVP of investor relations, effective Sep. 15. Doherty, who will report to Kane, will retain his treasurer duties. Prior to joining Pacer, Doherty was VP and treasurer for RailAmerica Inc.
