CTA to expand fiber optic network

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) board recently approved spending $31 million to upgrade the authority’s rail communication system.

CTA will install fiber optic cables on the Yellow and Purple lines, and upgrade fiber optics on the elevated Loop. The authority also is adding fiber optics to the Dan Ryan branch of the Red Line as part of a rehabilitation project, and will install fiber optics on the Brown Line and Forest Park branch of the Blue Line, and at several stations.

The fiber optics will increase CTA’s capacity to transmit information from the track to its control center.

The authority already has installed fiber optics along the Green and Orange lines, 54th/Cermak branch of the Blue Line, Blue Line from O’Hare to the Jackson subway station, and Red Line from Howard to Roosevelt.
